The Maasai Mara Conservancies are a network of community-owned wildlife areas surrounding the Masai Mara National Reserve that have transformed conservation in the greater Mara ecosystem. Conservancies including Olare Motorogi, Naboisho, Mara North, and Ol Kinyei collectively cover over 100000 hectares and support the same spectacular wildlife as the main reserve but with strict limits on bed numbers and vehicle density. This means visitors enjoy the same phenomenal game viewing — including during the Great Migration — but with far fewer vehicles at sightings. The conservancies also permit off-road driving, walking safaris, and night drives that are not allowed in the national reserve. Critically the conservancy model provides direct income to Maasai landowners creating powerful incentives for wildlife protection. Many of East Africa’s finest luxury camps are located in these conservancies including Angama Mara, Mara Plains, and Rekero.
