Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s most iconic safari destinations famous for its dramatic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro — Africa’s highest peak rising majestically beyond the park’s borders in Tanzania. The park is renowned for its large elephant herds which have been the subject of the longest-running elephant research project in Africa led by Cynthia Moss since 1972. Amboseli’s relatively compact size of 392 square kilometres and open terrain make wildlife sighting easy and reliable. The park’s ecosystem includes five major habitats — open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush, swampland, and marshes fed by Kilimanjaro’s melting snow. These wetlands attract dense concentrations of wildlife even during the dry season. Large predators including lion, cheetah, and hyena are present while the birdlife is excellent with over 400 species recorded.
