The Ngorongoro Crater is a natural wonder and one of Africa’s most extraordinary safari destinations. This massive volcanic caldera measuring roughly 20 kilometres across and 600 metres deep creates a self-contained ecosystem supporting approximately 25000 large animals. The crater floor is a mosaic of grassland, swamp, forest, and lake that provides habitat for an exceptional density of predators and prey. The Big Five are all present including the critically endangered black rhino which is more reliably seen here than almost anywhere else in Africa. Lake Magadi on the crater floor attracts flamingos while the forested rim offers encounters with elephant and buffalo. Game drives descend into the crater via steep access roads and the concentration of wildlife in this confined space makes for some of the most productive game viewing on the continent.
