Nyerere National Park is the largest national park in Africa covering over 30000 square kilometres of wild and largely untouched wilderness in southern Tanzania. Formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve and redesignated in 2019, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and represents one of the last great wild places on the continent. The northern photographic sector accessible to tourists encompasses a stunning landscape of lakes, rivers, and woodland harbouring extraordinary concentrations of wildlife including one of Africa’s largest elephant populations and significant populations of wild dog, lion, hippo, and crocodile. Boat safaris on the Rufiji River are a signature experience with massive concentrations of hippo and crocodile along the banks. The park’s remoteness and vast size mean visitor numbers are a fraction of the northern circuit parks creating a genuine wilderness experience. Walking safaris and fly-camping add to the adventure dimension.
