Big Five Safaris

4-Day Kruger National Park Luxury Safari from Johannesburg

South Africa 4 Days Easy

Overview

This four-day safari runs from Johannesburg into the Greater Kruger, with three nights split between two lodges and game viewing that moves from the Balule Nature Reserve into Kruger National Park itself. Viva Safaris operates it with a maximum of nine travellers, and rates start at US$1,502.74 per person as listed on GetYourGuide in September 2026.

The programme is built around open-vehicle drives at dawn and dusk, walking with an armed ranger, and a closing morning on the Panorama Route above the escarpment. It is the shortest format that still gives you two full days of game viewing rather than one.

Who it suits

Four days is enough to cover the Big Five without the trip becoming a run of long transfers. Travellers arriving at OR Tambo with a few days spare before or after a longer trip get the most from it, as do first-time visitors who want the Kruger without committing a full week.

The group is capped at nine, so the vehicles stay uncrowded and the guiding stays personal. Two of the four days include walking, so reasonable mobility helps, though the pace is not demanding.

Day by day

Day 1: Johannesburg to Tremisana Game Lodge

Collection from OR Tambo International Airport or a Johannesburg hotel, with departures no later than 09:30, then the drive north east to the Balule Nature Reserve. The afternoon is given to a four-hour sunset drive, followed by a bush barbecue dinner and a night drive, when the nocturnal species are active.

Day 2: Olifants River walk and transfer to Katekani

The morning is a four-hour guided bush walk along the Olifants River, which changes the scale of what you notice after a day in a vehicle. Brunch and time at the pool follow, then a sundowner drive of three and a half hours before the transfer to Katekani Tented Lodge.

Day 3: A full day inside Kruger National Park

A full day of game viewing inside the national park, entering through Orpen gate. This is the day that covers the most ground and carries the best odds on the Big Five, with birding through the quieter middle hours. Dinner and a second night at Katekani.

Day 4: Morning walk and the Panorama Route

An early walk with an armed ranger, then breakfast and the drive back by way of the Panorama Route, stopping at the Blyde River Canyon and the Three Rondawels. Arrival in Johannesburg is late afternoon.

The lodges

Tremisana Game Lodge sits inside the Balule Nature Reserve and has 15 chalets plus a two-bedroom guesthouse, taking a maximum of 34 guests. Rooms are en suite with air conditioning and mosquito nets, and the lodge is reached on tarred road, which keeps it accessible through the wet months.

Katekani Tented Lodge has four tented chalets on raised decks, each with its own splash pool and both indoor and outdoor showers. The canvas panels are set into sliding aluminium doors, and the interiors are air-conditioned. It borders the Kapama Game Reserve, and lion and hyena are audible from the deck at night.

What is included

All entrance and conservation fees, all breakfasts and dinners with one lunch, every game drive and bush walk, airport and hotel transfers, and WiFi at both lodges.

What is excluded

Drinks, though a cash bar operates at both lodges, lunches on transfer days, gratuities, personal items, and any international or domestic flights.

When to go

May to September is the dry season and the most reliable window: the bush thins out, surface water is scarce and game concentrates on what remains. The green season from October to April brings newborn game, migrant birds and heavier vegetation, which makes for harder spotting but a fuller landscape. The Greater Kruger is a malaria area, so take current medical advice before you travel.

Departures and practicalities

Pickups run from OR Tambo International Airport or a Johannesburg hotel, and inbound flights need to land early enough for a departure by 09:30. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before the start. The tour held a rating of 4.2 out of 5 from 13 reviews at the time of checking.

What it costs

Rates start at US$1,502.74 per person, as listed on GetYourGuide and checked in September 2026. Pricing is subject to availability and may change without notice, so confirm the current rate when you book.

Other ways to see the Kruger

If four days is more than you have, the three-day Kruger safari from Johannesburg covers similar ground in a shorter format. The four-day Panorama Route and Kruger safari gives more weight to the escarpment scenery, and the five-day Timbavati safari moves into a private reserve with traversing rights.
