Overview
Sandwich Harbour is one of the few places on earth where the dunes of the Namib run straight into the Atlantic. This half-day 4×4 excursion from the Swakopmund and Walvis Bay coast crosses the salt pans and dune belt to reach the lagoon, a Ramsar-listed wetland that draws flamingos, pelicans and large numbers of migratory waders. The driving is the point as much as the destination. Guides take the vehicles along the beach and over the dune faces, timing the run against the tide, and stop on the high dunes above the lagoon for the view down the coast. Desert Dunes and Dust Tours runs it with a maximum of 15 travellers. Brunch is laid out on the dunes and included in the rate, along with snacks and drinks. The whole excursion takes four to five hours, which makes it an easy addition to a coastal stay rather than a full day committed.Highlights
