Overview
This five-day Rwanda itinerary pairs a night in Kigali at Hemingways Retreat, a boutique hotel on the outskirts of the capital, with three nights at Virunga Lodge overlooking the lakes below the Virunga volcanoes. Volcanoes National Park holds twelve fully habituated gorilla families and forms the Rwandan section of the Virunga Massif, where Visit Rwanda puts the mountain gorilla population at 604 of roughly 1,000 surviving in the wild. It is also where Dian Fossey spent almost two decades studying and protecting them. Rwanda offers some of Africa’s most accessible gorilla tracking, with the park within comfortable road transfer distance of Kigali International Airport, which makes this a realistic trip for travellers with less than a week to spare. Gorilla tracking permits, which the Rwanda Development Board prices at US$1,500 per person per day, are included in the quoted rate rather than charged on top. The trip is sold through Go2Africa with seasonal pricing across the year.Highlights
