The Skeleton Coast is one of the most evocative and remote wilderness areas in Africa stretching along Namibia’s Atlantic coast from the Kunene River in the north to the Ugab River in the south. Named for the whale bones and shipwrecks that litter its shores the Skeleton Coast is a place of raw and austere beauty where the cold Benguela Current meets the Namib Desert creating a landscape of fog-shrouded dunes, gravel plains, and rocky shores. The southern section is accessible by self-drive but the northern Skeleton Coast wilderness is restricted to fly-in safaris operated by a handful of specialist operators. Desert-adapted elephant, lion, brown hyena, and gemsbok survive in this harsh environment alongside massive Cape fur seal colonies at places like Cape Cross. The Skeleton Coast offers a profoundly different safari experience — not for Big Five game drives but for the overwhelming sense of wilderness, solitude, and the raw power of nature.
