Kafue National Park is Zambia’s oldest and largest national park and one of the biggest in Africa covering over 22400 square kilometres — roughly the size of Wales. Despite its size Kafue remains one of Africa’s best-kept secrets receiving a fraction of the visitors that flock to the Serengeti or Kruger. The park’s diverse habitats range from miombo woodland to the seasonally flooded Busanga Plains in the north which offer some of the most spectacular game viewing in Southern Africa. Busanga’s open grasslands support large herds of red lechwe, puku, and buffalo alongside healthy populations of lion, leopard, and cheetah. The Kafue River running through the park provides excellent fishing and boat-based safari opportunities. Kafue’s remoteness and low visitor numbers create a genuine wilderness experience that is increasingly rare in Africa.
