Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest and most iconic wildlife destination covering over 14600 square kilometres of Kalahari sandveld in the country’s northwest. The park supports one of the largest elephant populations in Africa with estimates of over 40000 and is renowned for its diverse predator population including lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, and spotted hyena. Hwange’s artificial waterholes — maintained by pumped boreholes — concentrate wildlife during the dry season creating phenomenal game viewing. The park’s varied habitat supports an impressive species list of over 100 mammals and 400 birds. Hwange is also famous for its painted dog (African wild dog) population and several research initiatives operate within the park. Safari options range from exclusive private concessions to the national parks camps offering accessible and affordable wildlife experiences.
