Gorongosa National Park is one of the most inspiring conservation success stories in Africa. Devastated by Mozambique’s civil war which reduced its wildlife populations by over 90 percent, the park has undergone a remarkable recovery since 2006 through a partnership between the Mozambican government and the Carr Foundation. Today Gorongosa’s vast floodplains, miombo woodlands, and Mount Gorongosa’s cloud forest support rapidly growing populations of lion, elephant, buffalo, and an extraordinary diversity of antelope and birdlife. The park’s 4000 square kilometres of restored wilderness offer a safari experience that combines excellent game viewing with the powerful narrative of ecological restoration. Gorongosa is also pioneering a model of community-centred conservation that integrates local livelihoods with wildlife protection making a visit here both a safari and a meaningful contribution to a larger vision.
