Sapo National Park is Liberia’s only national park and protects one of the most significant remaining blocks of primary tropical rainforest in West Africa. Covering over 1800 square kilometres in the southeast of the country the park harbours an extraordinary biodiversity including populations of pygmy hippo, forest elephant, chimpanzee, and several species of duiker and primate. The park was established in 1983 and has survived Liberia’s civil wars largely intact due to its remoteness and the efforts of local communities. Sapo’s dense lowland rainforest is home to over 590 bird species and the park has been identified as a priority area for primate conservation in West Africa. Access is challenging — typically requiring a boat journey up the Sinoe River followed by a hike into the forest — but the reward is experiencing one of the last great rainforests in the region. This is a destination for hardy adventurers and conservation enthusiasts willing to trade comfort for authenticity.
