Taï National Park guide
Overview
Taï National Park in southwestern Côte d’Ivoire protects one of the largest remaining areas of primary tropical rainforest in West Africa. Declared a national park in 1972 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, it lies between the Cavally and Sassandra rivers near the border with Liberia.
The park is managed by the Ivorian parks office, OIPR. A community-based ecotourism programme, supported by the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation, allows small groups to visit the forest with local guides.
Wildlife
Taï is famous for its chimpanzees, which have been studied for decades and are known for using stones and wood to crack nuts. The forest is also home to pygmy hippopotamus, forest elephant, leopard, several duiker species and many primates, including the Diana monkey and red colobus. Birdlife is rich, with many forest species.
