Majete Wildlife Reserve is Malawi’s greatest conservation triumph. In 2003 when African Parks took over management the reserve was virtually devoid of wildlife after decades of unchecked poaching. Through one of Africa’s most ambitious rewilding programmes over 3000 animals have been reintroduced including elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, black rhino, sable, and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest. In 2012 Majete became Malawi’s first Big Five reserve when black rhinos were successfully reintroduced. The 691 square kilometre reserve along the Shire River now supports a thriving ecosystem with excellent game viewing particularly in the dry season when wildlife concentrates along the watercourses. Mkulumadzi Lodge offers luxury accommodation within the reserve while the community campsite provides budget-friendly options. Majete demonstrates what is possible when professional management and community engagement come together for conservation.
