Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is the most popular and accessible protected area in Madagascar located just three hours east of the capital Antananarivo. The park consists of two sections — the smaller Analamazaotra Special Reserve (commonly called Andasibe) and the larger Mantadia National Park — together protecting over 15000 hectares of primary and secondary montane rainforest. The park’s star attraction is the indri — Madagascar’s largest living lemur whose haunting whale-like calls echo through the forest canopy each morning. In total 11 lemur species inhabit the park alongside an extraordinary diversity of chameleons, geckos, frogs, and endemic birds. The night walks here are legendary revealing tiny mouse lemurs, leaf-tailed geckos, and iridescent frogs. Andasibe-Mantadia provides an essential introduction to Madagascar’s unique biodiversity and is often the first stop on any wildlife-focused itinerary to the island.
