Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is one of Kenya’s most important conservation success stories and a UNESCO World Heritage Site extension of Mount Kenya. The conservancy covers 25000 hectares of savanna, woodland, and swamp at the foot of Mount Kenya and is home to approximately 12 percent of Kenya’s entire rhino population — both black and white species. Lewa pioneered the conservancy model in Kenya demonstrating that wildlife conservation and community livelihoods can thrive together. The conservancy supports over 70 mammal species including Grevy’s zebra (one of the world’s most endangered large mammals), reticulated giraffe, elephant, and all major predators. Safari here combines outstanding game viewing with the satisfaction of directly supporting a conservation model that has been replicated across East Africa. The annual Lewa Safari Marathon is one of the world’s most unique running events.
