Odzala-Kokoua National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Africa and one of the most remote and pristine wilderness areas on the continent. Located in the heart of the Republic of Congo’s tropical rainforest the park covers over 13500 square kilometres of dense lowland rainforest, swamp forest, and bai (forest clearings). Odzala is a premier destination for western lowland gorilla tracking — distinct from the mountain gorillas of Rwanda and Uganda — with several habituated groups accessible to visitors. The park’s forest clearings attract extraordinary gatherings of forest elephants, forest buffalo, and bongo while the surrounding canopy shelters chimpanzees, 11 other primate species, and over 440 bird species. This is genuine frontier safari in one of the world’s last great wildernesses. Access is typically via charter flight from Brazzaville to camps operated by specialist lodges within the park.
