Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park holds a unique place in conservation history as the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa and the park that single-handedly saved the southern white rhino from extinction. When the reserve was established in 1895 only around 20 southern white rhinos survived anywhere on Earth. Through decades of dedicated protection and the revolutionary Operation Rhino capture-and-translocation programme the population was rebuilt and distributed to parks across Africa and the world. Today the park supports a healthy population of both white and black rhino alongside the full complement of Big Five species. The landscape ranges from mountainous terrain in the north around Hluhluwe to the broad river valleys of iMfolozi in the south. Guided wilderness trails in the iMfolozi wilderness area offer one of Southern Africa’s premier walking safari experiences following in the footsteps of conservation pioneer Ian Player.
