Nyungwe Forest National Park protects one of the oldest and most biodiverse montane rainforests in Africa. Covering 1019 square kilometres in southwestern Rwanda the forest sits at altitudes between 1600 and 2950 metres and is estimated to be several million years old — predating the last ice age. Nyungwe is a primate paradise home to 13 species including habituated chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, Ruwenzori colobus (seen in troops of up to 400 individuals — the largest arboreal primate groups in Africa), and the rare owl-faced monkey. The park supports over 310 bird species including 27 Albertine Rift endemics making it one of Africa’s most important birding sites. The canopy walkway — suspended 50 metres above the forest floor — offers a thrilling perspective on the forest ecosystem. Nyungwe completes Rwanda’s remarkable trio of parks alongside Volcanoes for gorillas and Akagera for savanna safari.
