Tarangire National Park is Tanzania’s sixth-largest park and one of its most underrated safari destinations. The Tarangire River is the lifeline of the park drawing massive concentrations of wildlife during the dry season when much of the surrounding area dries up. The park is famous for its enormous elephant herds — some of the largest in East Africa — and its dramatic landscape studded with ancient baobab trees. Tarangire’s 2850 square kilometres support an impressive diversity of wildlife including large populations of lion, leopard, and the rare fringe-eared oryx alongside over 550 bird species making it one of Tanzania’s best birding destinations. The park receives significantly fewer visitors than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro creating a more intimate and exclusive safari atmosphere. Tree-climbing pythons, gerenuk, and lesser kudu add to the diversity of species not commonly found in other northern circuit parks.
