Tsavo East National Park is one of the world’s largest national parks and together with Tsavo West forms one of the biggest protected ecosystems on Earth. The park is famous for its red elephants — herds that dust-bathe in the park’s distinctive red laterite soil giving them a striking russet appearance. Tsavo East’s vast open plains and relatively flat terrain provide excellent visibility and the park’s lower visitor numbers compared to the Mara offer a more exclusive safari experience. The Galana River cutting through the park creates a lifeline of green attracting dense concentrations of wildlife including hippo, crocodile, and large herds of buffalo. Mudanda Rock — a massive inselberg — serves as a natural dam and gathering point for elephants during the dry season. The park also has a tragic but fascinating history as the setting for the infamous man-eating lions of Tsavo.
