Addo Elephant National Park is the flagship conservation area of South Africa’s Eastern Cape and one of the few places in the world where you can see the Big Seven — the traditional Big Five plus southern right whales and great white sharks in the marine section. Originally established in 1931 to protect the last 11 remaining elephants in the region Addo has grown into a conservation success story now supporting over 600 elephants alongside lion, buffalo, black rhino, leopard, and a host of other species. The park’s malaria-free status makes it an excellent family-friendly safari destination and its proximity to Port Elizabeth provides easy access. The main game viewing area offers excellent self-drive safari with well-maintained roads and a good rest camp. The park continues to expand with plans to create a mega-park stretching from the Karoo to the coast.
