Spanning nearly two million hectares across the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, the park stretches approximately 360 kilometres from north to south and up to 65 kilometres from east to west — an area roughly the size of Wales.

First proclaimed as the Sabie Game Reserve in 1898 under President Paul Kruger to curb the rapid decline of wildlife through unregulated hunting, the park was officially established as a national park in 1926. Today it forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a vast cross-border conservation area that links Kruger with Mozambique’s Limpopo National Park and Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou National Park, creating a protected wilderness of over 3.7 million hectares.

The park’s landscapes are remarkably varied. The southern regions feature dense riverine bush and mixed bushveld that support the highest concentrations of wildlife, while the central plains around Satara are defined by open grasslands ideal for spotting large predators. To the north, the terrain shifts to ancient baobab-studded mopane woodland — a more remote and less-visited region that rewards patient visitors with sightings of rare antelope species and exceptional birdlife.

With 12 main rest camps, five bushveld camps, two bush lodges, and four satellite camps within the public park — alongside a constellation of world-class private lodges in the adjacent Greater Kruger reserves — the park caters to every style of safari, from self-drive adventurers to travellers seeking the finest luxury bush experience.

Wildlife Highlights

Kruger is one of the most biodiverse protected areas in Africa, home to 147 mammal species, 507 bird species, 114 reptile species, 49 fish species, and over 330 tree species. All five of Africa’s iconic Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and Cape buffalo — are found within its borders.

The park supports an estimated 1,500 lions and around 1,000 leopards, making it one of the continent’s premier destinations for big cat sightings. The open plains around Satara rest camp are particularly renowned for lion activity, while the Sabie River basin offers some of Africa’s best leopard viewing. An estimated 17,000 elephants roam the park — a population large enough that herds are encountered on virtually every game drive — and around 48,000 buffalo move through in sweeping herds that can number in the hundreds.

Kruger also plays a critical role in the conservation of endangered species. It holds the world’s largest population of wild white rhinoceros, though poaching pressure remains a constant threat. The park is home to approximately 400 of South Africa’s remaining African wild dogs — one of the continent’s most endangered large carnivores — as well as healthy populations of cheetah, spotted hyena, and the elusive African civet.

For birders, Kruger is exceptional. The park’s avifauna ranges from raptors like the martial eagle, bateleur, and African fish eagle to sought-after species including the saddle-billed stork, southern ground hornbill, and Pel’s fishing owl. Summer migrants boost the species count even further, making the wet season an especially rewarding time for birdwatching.

Getting There

Kruger is well-connected by air and road from South Africa’s major centres.

The most convenient airport for the southern section of the park is Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA), located near Nelspruit (Mbombela). KMIA receives daily flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, and the drive from the airport to the nearest park gates — Numbi or Malelane — takes under an hour. For the central section, Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport serves the Orpen Gate area and the private reserves of Timbavati, Klaserie, and Thornybush. Skukuza Airport, located inside the park itself near the main rest camp, offers daily scheduled flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Many luxury private lodges in the Greater Kruger reserves offer direct charter transfers from Johannesburg to private bush airstrips, with flight times of around 90 minutes. This is the most seamless option for travellers prioritising comfort and time — you step off the aircraft and onto a game drive vehicle.

For self-drive visitors, Johannesburg is approximately four to five hours from the park’s southern gates via the N4 or N12 highways. The park has ten entrance gates, each with strictly enforced opening and closing times that vary seasonally. The speed limit is 50 km/h on tarred roads and 40 km/h on gravel, and all gates are now cashless — bring a credit or debit card. A well-maintained network of roughly 1,800 kilometres of tarred and gravel roads makes self-drive exploration straightforward, though many visitors also opt for guided game drives in open safari vehicles for the best wildlife encounters.

Best Time to Visit

Kruger is a year-round destination, but the experience shifts dramatically between the dry and wet seasons.

The dry winter months from May to September are widely considered the best period for wildlife viewing. Vegetation thins out as trees shed their leaves, grasses dry to golden-brown, and water becomes scarce across the landscape. This forces animals to congregate at permanent waterholes, dams, and rivers — making sightings far more frequent and predictable. Predator activity along the major rivers and around water sources is particularly impressive during this period. Daytime temperatures are pleasant (around 24–26°C), though early mornings and evenings can be cold, with temperatures dropping below 10°C. Pack warm layers for dawn game drives.

September and October mark the transition to spring. The bush is at its driest and most open, producing some of the year’s best game viewing. Temperatures rise sharply, and the first rains typically arrive in late October, bringing the first flush of green back to the landscape. This is an excellent window that combines peak wildlife visibility with slightly fewer visitors than mid-winter.

The wet summer months from November to March transform the park into a lush, green paradise. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and the landscape becomes visually stunning — but the dense vegetation and abundant water sources mean animals disperse across the park, making them harder to spot. This is, however, the best season for birdwatching, as summer migrants arrive and the park’s species count climbs well above 400. It is also when many animals give birth, and seeing newborns alongside their mothers is one of the most memorable experiences Kruger has to offer.

Note that Kruger falls within a malaria zone. The risk is highest during the wet summer months when mosquito activity peaks. Consult a healthcare professional about antimalarial precautions before your visit — the risk is significantly lower during the dry winter season.

Kruger National Park is South Africa’s flagship wildlife destination and one of the largest game reserves on the African continent.

[33
71
post-149","las_park","type-las_park","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","las_country-south-africa","las_park_classification-national-park
["GET
